S1 E9: I’m Done With All This with Herica Silva
Manage episode 295614566 series 2935013
In this episode, Candace introduces her close friend and a great inspiration, Herica Silva. Herica was born and raised in Milwaukee. She’s been married for 20 years and has two beautiful daughters. She has 25 years of tenure at Rockwell Automation and is working as a Demand Planner.
Herica has a powerful testimony. She has been on a healing journey and is very passionate about sharing her story, and also about supporting survivors of sexual assault. Her hope is to see the end of sexual assault in this world by encouraging victims to speak out, and that justice system begins holding up perpetrators accountable for their wrongdoing by giving them longer sentences.
Episode highlights:
06:58 – Herica’s story: I started getting sexually abused at a young age. I have blocked a lot of memories, but I do remember my father was one of the first abusers.
17:45 – That victim decided to tell, and he was prosecuted for that abuse. So, he was in prison for quite a long time, but you would not imagine the repercussions the victim had. Everybody turned against her. That scared me too.
26:30 – That was my second rejection that I got. First was my mother, she did not want to help. And I was really disappointed with the whole system and the school as well, because when I went to see a social worker again, she’s like: If you’re not going to tell the truth, I’m not going to talk to you.
35:12 – Since that day on, I’ve known there’s a purpose for me in this life and that I wasn’t ready to go. And this is why I do this.
41:07 – At first, I did not want to forgive because I thought that if I forgive it means I have to forget what they did, and that’s exactly not what forgiveness is. I realized that once I forgave these men for what they did, it gave me freedom, and took all the weight off my shoulders.
