Codependency encompasses a range of behaviors that can lead to unhealthy relationships, and one of these behaviors is caretaking. It is worth noting that while people often use the terms caregiving and caretaking interchangeably, they are distinct concepts. Caregiving is a natural expression of love and is an integral part of healthy adult relationships. On the other hand, caretaking often involves an imbalanced dynamic where there is more "taking" than giving. This is because caregiving stems from a place of abundance, while caretaking arises from need and deprivation. Understanding the continuum between caretaking and caregiving is essential. The aim is to engage in as much caregiving as possible while reducing caretaking tendencies. The challenge lies in learning to detach and let go. However, detachment does not imply caring any less about our loved ones. Rather, it means respecting their dignity and allowing them to make mistakes and find their own path. Concurrently, we must tend to our own neglected needs and empower others to do the same by supporting their choices. By embracing this approach, we can foster healthier relationships and personal growth for both ourselves and others.
