Amanda Goodall, PhD, joins me in Part Two of our conversation discussing the advanced degree program for physician leaders that she founded. She talks about barriers to physician leadership development including political correctness, assumptions that physicians aren’t interested, and the daunting “re-entry” into entrenched cultures.
Dr. Goodall points to a central problem with business schools: the separation of business education from any actual workplace, profession, or culture. This echoes Henry Mintzberg’s concerns cited in Licensed to Lead podcast episode #3 (“Who are the Masters in Healthcare?”).
Dr. Goodall draws a comparison between the challenges of increasing physician leadership and increasing organizational diversity. Before signing off, she spills the beans on her Big Hairy Audacious Goal, talks about being a Tiger Ambassador, and introduces her walking partners.
Tune in as we dive into the questions:
Do physicians want to take on management and leadership roles?
What makes physician leadership development appealing and effective?
What are the parallels between increasing workforce diversity and engaging the best physicians in leadership roles?
In This Episode:
[01:47] Dr. Goodall describes her advanced degree program for physicians: Executive Masters In Medical Leadership.
[12:06] Business schools have separated professional expertise from management education.
[13:02] The pitfalls of management by people who don’t understand the core business: micromanagement and measurement.
[16:23] Why experts are crucial and often challenging for politicians.
Key Takeaways:
Discover the benefits of physician-only leader development programs
The business school mindset has separated expertise from management at great cost to healthcare
Healthcare systems must ask what physicians need and want in order to increase desirability of leadership positions
