Don't Mess with These Menopause Experts!
When The Lancet, one of the oldest, most respected medical journals, published a series of articles saying that “menopause had been over-medicalized”, that many symptoms were “just in her head” and that overall, women should navigate menopause “without the need for medical treatments” a group of furious menopause experts went ballistic. Dr. Haver and I address 4 specific statements from the Lancet article:
- “Most women navigate menopause without the need for medical treatments.”
- “During the menopausal transition, women should “challenge self-critical beliefs, which can…make [hot] flushes worse.”
- “Based on scarce data, we found no compelling evidence that risk of anxiety, bipolar disorder, or psychosis is universally elevated over the menopause transition.”
- “Over-medicalization of menopause can lead to disempowerment and over-treatment.”
