Wellness? Sounds Well Suss
Manage episode 279623774 series 2781382
EPISODE NINE BABY! Chlo and Joanna have been fatigued to all gaddamned heck lately, so they found a Netflix doco series about the clusterf*ck that is the wellness industry to binge and rant about - classic stuff. They also delve in the undeniably common link between wellness, conspiracy theories and Nazism (hi Pete), explain how the ‘spoon theory’ began, and also commemorate the wonderful late Stella Young. Chloe also found a tin foil hat book in her parents’ bookshelf about how to ‘cure’ arthritis or some nonsense, so of course she had to do QUACK WATCH and read out über-borked bits while Jo scream laughs. Also more SPOONIE HOTLINE, hell yeah! The chix actually got quite a bit done in this episode, considering how utterly rubbish they felt. Good for them!
LINKS
- Stella Young’s TED talk ‘I’m not your inspiration, thank you very much’
- ‘Nazi Hippies: When the New Age and Far Right Overlap’ by Jules Evans (Medium)
- ‘Why are conspiracy theories rampant in the 'wellness' industry? Welcome to conspirituality’ by Derek Beres (Big Think)
- ‘How Covid-19 paranoia united the wellness industry and rightwing conspiracy theorists’ by Brigid Delaney (The Guardian)
- ‘[Un]Well’ documentary series, Netflix (the pod references episodes 1 - ‘Essential Oils’ and 6 - ‘Bee Sting Therapy’)
- ‘How spoons became a powerful symbol for invisible disability’ by Chloe Sargeant, SBS Voices
