#88: Bryce is back with more live coverage from the 2023 Mobilize Recovery Conference where he had the opportunity to sit down and chat with Stancil Tootle. Stancil is a person in long-term recovery who is blind and from a rural area in Georgia. He is a presenter at the Conference and speaks on the barriers to recovery for people who look like him, from both a racial and disability standpoint. Check out the episode to hear a discussion on access to treatment for folks with disabilities, bringing awareness within the recovery community, and more, including:

  • How the recovery community presents some of the same ableist mindsets as the general public, and how we can do better.
  • How organizations like The Phoenix can be more inclusive and ensure that folks with disabilities are not a second thought.
  • How there is stigma in the recovery community, but also a lot of stigma towards recovery within the disability community.
  • A perception shift: one of beauties of recovery is that you live long enough that you might end up needing some care . . . and you want to make sure the care is there when you do.

To connect with Stancil, check out the Facebook group Tuesdays with Tootle and check out his weekly Zoom meetings
