Welcome to another enlightening episode of "Wellness Beyond the Chart"! I'm Dr. Yvonne, your friendly guide on this journey to holistic health and wellness. Today, we're tackling a topic that's especially relevant for those of us approaching middle age: physical fitness.

In this episode titled "Beyond BMI: Redefining Fitness Goals," we explore the limitations of using BMI as the primary measure of health. Studies show that BMI often misclassifies Black women due to differences in body composition. For instance, Black Americans tend to have lower body fat percentages and higher muscle mass, which BMI doesn't account for, often labeling us incorrectly as overweight or obese.

Instead, we'll discuss more effective ways to gauge health, such as measuring waist circumference and waist-to-hip ratios, which provide better insights into health risks by focusing on abdominal fat – the more critical type to monitor. I'll teach you how to measure your waist-to-hip ratio and explain why it's a more reliable health indicator.

I'll also share my personal fitness journey, from carrying extra weight throughout adulthood to the new challenges of perimenopause. Despite the obstacles, I've committed to improving 1% per day, finding that small, consistent changes can lead to significant, sustainable improvements over time.

And let’s not forget the spiritual aspect. We’ll draw parallels between faith and our fitness journey, inspired by Matthew 14:22-26, where Peter walks on water towards Jesus. Just as Peter had to overcome doubt and fear, we too must navigate our wellness journey with faith, even when facing resistance from our bodies and minds.

I'll provide ten practical tips for busy women to incorporate the 1% improvement mentality into their daily lives. From morning stretches and mindful eating to staying hydrated and practicing gratitude, these simple steps can seamlessly fit into your routine, making wellness achievable even on the busiest days.

Join me in redefining fitness goals and embracing a holistic view of wellness that goes beyond numbers on a scale. Remember, wellness is a journey, not a destination. Let's take it one small step at a time, trusting that God is with us every step of the way, ready to catch us when we slip.
