The homelessness crisis in the United States is at an all-time high, with 653,000 people experiencing homelessness on any given night, the highest number since 2007. Homelessness involves complex factors such as mental health, economic instability, and inadequate social support. Yet recently, a Supreme Court case debated whether sleeping on the streets should be a crime, drawing attention to the lack of humanity that often surrounds this topic.

Ariane Porras is on the front line of this issue every day. As a Social Worker and Community Collaborative Director at the YMCA of San Diego, she calls for a reevaluation of how we as a society see unhoused people. "We're missing the fact that they're our neighbors," she says, reminding us that one of the main reasons people lose their homes is the high cost of medical bills.

In this episode, she and neurobiology expert Rajkumari Neogy explore ideas that can bring about collective change. They discuss the practice of emotional co-regulation, ways to become aware of a dominance-centered mindset, and why power is our most addictive substance.
