Autumn Henning, SLP Speech Language Pathologist busting Speech Myths, Kimi calls this one "Speech Myth Busters". She gives us so many insightful nuggets such as the "Top 3 Reasons for Speech Sound Disorders". We talk about the pharyngeal and esophogeal swallow and all the crazy things that need to happen in the throat after the food leaves the mouth to swallow (14 minutes). 26 muscles, 6 cranial nerves for each swallow. Hygienists and SLP can work with oral phase of swallow with chewing and tongue placement, but for swallowing disorders in the throat or esophogus is more SLP scope. This is why it's important to collaborate!

We talk about why R is such a common speech disorder and WHY from a speech perspective. Tongue tie or not, R is the most common speech issue. (34 minutes)

We talk about reasons why kids that are in speech therapy at school are often missed for myofunctional disorders or ties. Because, just like in dentistry, myofunctional therapy is not taught as part of curriculum in school for SLP. As well as funding and district rules in school systems.

We talk about the controversial topic of provider fatigue, gate keeping treatment due to tongue space. We each talk about our personal airway size and how we would not be candidates for releases.
