Dr. Karen Leitner is a physician coach who shares 10 ways (and other incredible tips!) to make your day easier as a woman doctor. Some are “small” changes that you can start doing today and watch it make a BIG impact on your work day and possibly even happiness.

Overview:

  1. Don’t check your email during clinic hours.
  2. Say thank you for waiting instead of, “I’m sorry I’m late”.
  3. Tell patients that you’re happy to see them.
  4. Take a 20 second pause in between each patient.
  5. You did not create the system…It’s a waste of your time to let the patient complain to you about it. Give them the manager or CEO card. (We get to agree with the patient.)
  6. Treat yourself like a cranky toddler. If you’re hungry, eat! Don’t run off to see the next patient or finish a chart.
  7. Pee when you have to! (Why do we walk around with overfilled bladders!)
  8. Instead of fixating on what you’re not doing well and the more that you have to do, focus on getting 1% better.
  9. Assume that everyone is doing their best and you don’t know how well you would do if you had their genetics, their upbringing, or their political beliefs. (Brene Brown)
  10. Try to remember why you decided to be a doctor in the first place.
