Founded in the Tampa Bay region in 1940s, Community Tampa Bay was formerly a regional affiliate of the National Conference for Christians and Jews, which later became known as the National Conference for Community and Justice (NCCJ). In 2005, they became became an independent 501(c)3 and adopted the name Community Tampa Bay. In addition to their advocacy and ongoing educational programs, the 2024 ANYTOWN® program just completed another successful summer. "This program designed to give YOU the power to change your school and community. ANYTOWN® is facilitated by both youth and adults, and is a great way to jumpstart or advance your leadership skills. Secondly, ANYTOWN® is a fun experience away from all the other stress of life. We play games, hang out in college dorms, enjoy all-you-can-eat-food three times a day, meet new people, and talk about ourselves! Did we mention it is completely free?" All youth 14-18 in the Tampa Bay area are encouraged to apply. There is no grade, GPA, extracurricular, income, behavioral requirement or exception. We intentionally accept a diverse class of 60 students for each session with respect to gender, sex, age, race, ethnicity, nationality, sexual orientation, faith, class and abilities.
MISSION The mission of Community Tampa Bay is to cultivate inclusive leaders to change communities through dialogue and cross-cultural interaction. The non-profit empowers people with the tools to have hard conversations with others who don’t look like them, live like them, or love like them to create a community free from all forms of discrimination. Their programs train and cultivate individuals who make a difference in institutions and communities by influencing others through dialogue and cross-cultural interactions. "We can effect positive change when we have leaders across identities who influence culture and interrupt systemic institutional discrimination through personal relationships, advocacy, and representation. We envision a community free from discrimination in which every individual is treated with dignity and respect, with regard to their race, ethnicity, nationality, sex, gender, sexual orientation, socio-economic status, ability, faith, and or age."
ABOUT THE CEO Tammy Briant Spratling brings a wealth of experience to Community Tampa Bay in non-profit management, education and diversity and inclusion. In addition to serving as CTB’s Executive Director, Tammy teaches civil rights law at Stetson University College of Law and higher education law and policy in the University of South Florida’s College of Education. She previously served as Assistant Dean for Student Affairs at Stetson Law where she provided leadership and vision to a team of student affairs, residential life, and mental health professionals. In 2015, NASPA, a national organization for Student Affairs Administrators, awarded Tammy it’s “Outstanding Professional in Graduate and Professional Student Services.” In 2016, she received the Outstanding Young Lawyer Award from the Hillsborough County Bar Association and the Business Observer’s top 40 under 40.
Tammy speaks and writes on the subjects of transformative learning theory, education law and policy, constitutional law and the modern Civil Rights Movement, and diversity and inclusion with a special focus on implicit bias. Formerly, an Assistant State Attorney in the Child Welfare Division of the 6th Judicial Circuit’s State Attorney’s Office, Tammy was a member of both the Florida Bar and American Bar Association, as well past member of the Board of Directors for the Hillsborough County Bar Association Young Lawyers Division. She is also a graduate of Leadership Tampa’s 2014 Class.
Finding balance in community, service, and the arts, she actively engages in pro bono work and commits herself to making Tampa Bay a better place through social justice advocacy initiatives. In addition, Tammy is President of the Gasparilla International Film Festival where her passion is bring films to the Tampa Bay area that serve as an educational tool for personal growth and transformation.
Tammy double majored in Criminology and Government & World Affairs, receiving a dual BA and BS degrees from the University of Tampa. She received her JD from Stetson University College of Law.
