In this episode, we speak with Dr. Christy Sutton, author of The Iron Curse, to debunk myths and misconceptions about iron. Dr. Sutton dives into the complex relationship between iron and health, discussing the potential dangers of both low and high iron levels and how they can impact overall well-being. We explore the root causes behind iron imbalances, including genetic factors, diet, and lifestyle, and discuss practical solutions to address these issues. She also provides valuable insights on what to request during lab testing, offering listeners a guide to better advocate for their health.
Dr. Christy Sutton is a chiropractor who is interested in asking why health problems happen and finding the safest, best solutions to common problems. Getting to the root of the problem is the foundation of her writing, teaching, and clinical practice. Her focus is on finding the cause of and avoiding health landmines early.
Her most recent book, The Iron Curse, is the product of discovering that her husband had hereditary hemochromatosis, and a pituitary tumor that may have been causes by having undiagnosed high iron damaging the body. After this experience she began to look closer at the hemochromatosis genes with iron labs in patients. She discovered that there is a silent epidemic of undiagnosed hemochromatosis, high iron, and that hemochromatosis patients are misunderstood, mistreated, misdiagnosed, and dismissed.
