Barbie's Pregnant Friend Midge Shows How Mother's are Silenced
Manage episode 372791551 series 2967445
Barbie Movie Spoiler Alert...I will be talking about the Barbie movie today! If you have not seen it yet- go see it! Today we are discussing a part of the Barbie movie that not many people are talking about...Barbie's friend Midge...the pregnant Midge.
Midge has come and gone in the Barbie franchise many times since she was introduced in the mid-60's. But it was the pregnant version of Midge that was so controversial. Pregnant Midge was introduced in 2002 as part of the "Happy Family" series with Alan and their son Ryan...and Midge almost immediately created such an uproar that the doll was discontinued that same year.
Why the uproar? The overwhelming argument was that a pregnant Midge would encourage & glorify pregnancy....what????? Society is perfectly ok with children playing with baby dolls and pretending to be parents...but not ok with playing with an actual mother. The irony!
I want to hear from you!
