NP and PA school do not prepare you for the steep learning curve that is emergency medicine. As APP’s we often don’t do a residency program and have to jump in and learn on the job in order to succeed. The environments we practice in are as varied as the physicians we will often practice side by side with. Dr. Adam Bariteau is an emergency medicine physician and former paramedic. I have personally learned a ton from him and he has helped me succeed in the ED from a new APP to a slightly more experienced APP. He often can be found teaching medical students and new APP’s in the ED while also maintaining the efficient pace that is needed in EM. He gives some great advice and tactics for surviving in the ED as a new APP that I think you will find valuable and make the job a little less daunting. As a lot of my audience is EMT’s, paramedics and nurses, I think this will give you a glimpse into the struggles that new APP’s have as well as insight into our relationship with the physicians. Hopefully, it will also help you make that leap if you are debating the APP route. As always, email me anytime at Aaron@practicalEMS.com and give me your feedback.
