We talk with Naveen about the Western Ghats, his experiences as an independent trekker and then as a trek guide in the Western Ghats, his experience of entrepreneurship, and how he sees the way forward for trekking in India. Naveen Mallesh started TrekNomads in 2016 to promote responsible trekking in the Western Ghats and the Himalayas. Naveen wishes to do all that he can to promote the Western Ghats and to empower local communities. He has led various social impact efforts such as: 1. Initiated the #NomadsAgainstCoronavirus campaign, to support on-ground local communities that depend on income from trekking and tourism industries. 2. Fundraising efforts for Kodagu following extensive floods in Coorg (2018) 3. Associated with Namami Gange project, helping the Territorial army to plant seed balls across regions to combat deforestation. Naveen is an avid fitness enthusiast – he has completed 8 full marathons so far, and is supporting people through their fitness journey even now amidst the Covid-19 lockdown. In 2019, Naveen started the Seven Summits of Alemaari (nomad in Kannada) project, aiming to scale the highest peaks across the Seven continents by 2022.
