Say Hello

Hey everyone! Welcome back to Navigate the Day. Today, we're diving into the timeless wisdom of Epictetus, exploring how to keep our cool when faced with disturbing news or events beyond our control. As Epictetus wisely said, "No news can ever be relevant to your reasoned choice." This episode is all about maintaining our inner tranquility and not letting external factors dictate our emotions or actions.

I had a bit of a personal revelation this week—I've often let life feel more like a burden than a gift. It's easy to get caught up in the hustle, especially when seeking stability or chasing after fleeting pleasures. But I've realized that this mindset has held me back from truly embracing the present and building a future grounded in my values.

One big challenge I've faced is letting external validation, or criticism, dictate my self-worth. Whether it's a compliment or a critique, I've noticed how much I let these things affect me. It's a dangerous game, especially when I find myself more attached to the negatives. For instance, I recently let my temper flare at work, snapping at a coworker over something trivial. It's a clear sign that I still have room to grow in managing my emotions and not letting external events shake my core.

Work has been a major stressor for me, often diminishing my quality of life. But I've come to realize that how I react to these situations is within my control. It's about striving for virtue—being compassionate, empathetic, and maintaining integrity in all my interactions. Even when resources are tight, I can still positively impact others' lives, simply by being a better, more understanding person.

Reflecting on my past, I see how a lack of discipline and an inflated ego have caused grief, not just for me, but for those around me. It's time for a change—a shift toward humility and a deeper appreciation for the supportive relationships in my life. I’ve been privileged in many ways, particularly with a loving family, and it’s high time I acknowledge and cherish that more fully.

So, join me as we explore how to navigate life's ups and downs with equanimity and wisdom. Let's work together to keep "the news" in check and focus on what truly matters—our reasoned choices and inner peace. Stay tuned for more insights and reflections on this journey towards a more fulfilling life!

Thank you for listening and joining me on my journey of self-discovery!
