#51 - From Amsterdam to Paris : Women of Colour Unite
Manage episode 273778007 series 2524773
When it comes to racial issues, we often turn our gaze towards the US instead of questioning and sharing our own experiences within European borders. In this bonus crossover episode in English with the hosts of the Dutch podcast Dipsaus, Rokhaya Diallo and Grace Ly converse with Mariam El Maslouhi and Ebissé Rouw, two women of colour living in the Netherlands who address, among others, the racial taboo in their work.
How do two former colonial empires such as the Netherlands and France deal with the children of their non-White communities? How is racial identity perceived in the Netherlands and in France? How differently are racial issues discussed in the public eye in both countries? And, most importantly, how do we initiate a dialogue between European people of colour?
During a little less than an hour, the four podcasters talk about their fluid racial identities, the fight against police violence, the racist tradition of Zwarte Piet in the Netherlands and recent antiracist mobilization in their respective country.
This podcast was recorded for the Read My World International Literature Festival 2020, which encourages authors to explore the borders between literature and (research) journalism. For the 2020 Europe edition, the co-creators who include Rokhaya Diallo got inspired by European Others, a book by Fatima El Tayeb.
