This week, we are talking all things assisted dying! Grim right? But an important one and a topic we wanted to unpack in more detail. Josiah actually shared the time he spoke to one of the first people in Victoria to go through the process.
In Australia, euthanasia and assisted dying laws vary by state, as each state has enacted its own legislation in recent years. The federal government prohibits euthanasia in the territories, so the Northern Territory and Australian Capital Territory cannot pass their own euthanasia laws.
Each state law in Australia allows for voluntary assisted dying under strict conditions, typically only for those with terminal illnesses, significant suffering, and a limited life expectancy. Safeguards include residency requirements, multiple assessments by independent practitioners, and mandatory waiting periods.
