Pink Sister Lesley Rabb’s social media post about firing her oncologist really got my attention. Too often we stay with a doctor that we don’t communicate well with, that doesn’t give us the time we need, that doesn’t seem to “hear” us.
We do that for various reasons. We’ve been taught to “respect” authority, and that might make us reluctant to speak up and be our own advocates with a medical professional. We might worry about if changing doctors will disrupt our treatment and, ultimately, our health. We might worry about hurting the doctor’s feelings. We might just be too dang worn out to do the work it will take to find a new doctor.
Lesley’s cautionary tale explains why having a medical team that communicates well with you, that “hears” you, that gives you the time necessary to make sure you know what is being recommended is CRITICAL to your health.
Thank you, Lesley, for telling your story. My guess is that it will encourage other women to stand up for themselves and make a change. BYE, FELICIA!
