Episode #012
Dr. Karlene Stange is the Founder of Animas Animals, which provides Natural and Complimentary Medicine for Animals. Karlene attended Fort Lewis College in Durango and continued into veterinary school, graduating in 1985 as a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine from Colorado State University. In 1996, she began her study of Traditional Chinese Veterinary Medicine, and subsequently traveled to China for advanced study, including Chinese herbal medicine, Tui-na, and Food Therapy.
Before she could say the word veterinarian, Karlene knew she wanted to be an “animal doctor.” All her teachers discouraged her, saying, “They don’t let girls be veterinarians.” Fortunately, my mother said I could do whatever I wanted.
She followed her inner guidance, in spite of continued opposition, and earned an interview for veterinary school in 1981. At the interview she was asked, “How is a little girl like you going to handle horses?” She replied, “If 1200 pounds of horse does not want to do what you want it to do, it doesn’t matter whether you weigh 100 pounds or 200 pounds. Managing horses requires skill, not size.” Thankfully, she followed her dream.
Dr. Stange is the author of The Spiritual Nature of Animals. Her experiences as a country vet drove her to research numerous spiritual traditions to answer difficult questions about animal consciousness and the bond between humans and the creatures with whom we share our planet. She shares wisdom from many cultures, and from the creatures themselves, to help us better understand the spiritual nature of animals. Her evolved understanding offers readers a unique interpretation expressed through a surprisingly seamless blend of science/medicine, spirituality, and personal experience.
