On this episode of Advances in Care , host Erin Welsh and Dr. Craig Smith, Chair of the Department of Surgery and Surgeon-in-Chief at NewYork-Presbyterian and Columbia discuss the highlights of Dr. Smith’s 40+ year career as a cardiac surgeon and how the culture of Columbia has been a catalyst for innovation in cardiac care. Dr. Smith describes the excitement of helping to pioneer the institution’s heart transplant program in the 1980s, when it was just one of only three hospitals in the country practicing heart transplantation. Dr. Smith also explains how a unique collaboration with Columbia’s cardiology team led to the first of several groundbreaking trials, called PARTNER (Placement of AoRTic TraNscatheteR Valve), which paved the way for a monumental treatment for aortic stenosis — the most common heart valve disease that is lethal if left untreated. During the trial, Dr. Smith worked closely with Dr. Martin B. Leon, Professor of Medicine at Columbia University Irving Medical Center and Chief Innovation Officer and the Director of the Cardiovascular Data Science Center for the Division of Cardiology. Their findings elevated TAVR, or transcatheter aortic valve replacement, to eventually become the gold-standard for aortic stenosis patients at all levels of illness severity and surgical risk. Today, an experienced team of specialists at Columbia treat TAVR patients with a combination of advancements including advanced replacement valve materials, three-dimensional and ECG imaging, and a personalized approach to cardiac care. Finally, Dr. Smith shares his thoughts on new frontiers of cardiac surgery, like the challenge of repairing the mitral and tricuspid valves, and the promising application of robotic surgery for complex, high-risk operations. He reflects on life after he retires from operating, and shares his observations of how NewYork-Presbyterian and Columbia have evolved in the decades since he began his residency. According to thevacationer.com, 82% of Americans planned to travel for vacation in 2024... but how many of them actually follow through with the plan? How many of them actually come up with a plan? If they are anything like me, they have good intentions but for one reason or another, the planning never took place. It can be such a hassle, but not anymore because we can use AI to plan our trips now! Saving time! Saving money!... but is it worth it? I tested out two apps, Nowy and Layla, and even put Chat GPT to the test. Here is what I found...…

When is it time to take a break from social media? What’s your why and how do you know if you should go back?
National Missing Children's Day is dedicated to encouraging parents, guardians, caregivers, and others concerned with the well-being of children to make child safety a priority. The children on this episode’s cover are all missing. If you recognize any of them, contact the FBI or local law enforcement, or submit a tip online to help bring them home to their families.…
Mother’s Day is right around the corner. What gift are you getting for your mom? Is it cheap, expensive… is it something she would like? Let’s talk gift giving and why it makes me…
Since the beginning battles have taken place, shots have been fired, people have been wounded and an occasional stray bullet has caught a bystander slipping. A new rap civil war has started and people are choosing sides. As long as they keep it on wax (or nowadays I guess we keep it binary) it will just be entertainment for the culture. Another debate to be had at the family cookout. What are your thoughts?…
6 years ago I gave birth to my brain child, an idea, a love, and a life line! What started out as a dare, turned into a good friend to lean on and confide in. Now others are leaning in and doing the same! Happy 6th birthday TT and may you have many more!

Life lessons learned as we wrap up Women’s History Month. Sometimes life is hard and on top of that we are hard on ourselves. Seeing everyone’s “life sizzle reel” on social media doesn’t make it any better. But know that history is made every day. You are making your own history AND if you feel like you are missing the mark… YOU can do something about it. Bottom line… stop putting yourself in a box.…
