The False Claims Act allows individuals to sue businesses that defraud the government (FCA). It was adopted during the Civil War period to enable victims of contractor fraud to seek redress. Under this provision, anybody may file a case, but the plaintiff must prove that they were hurt as a consequence of the fraud. The plaintiff is entitled to a portion of the defendant's compensation if they win.
