At age 33, he was the youngest and only one with dreads. Pierce is, among other things, a father, husband, UNC professor, scholar, entrepreneur, community activist and emcee. Raised in Durham, he talked about why he took a year off from teaching to enter politics, the lessons learned on the campaign trail, watching Durham change around him and the part he wants to play in the Bull City's future. We spend the last 20 minutes talking about his teaching, Black pop culture, who really owns it, his 1-0n-1 discussion with Maya Angelou and try to figure out: Was James Brown the first mumble rapper?
