In parenting, it's vital to recognize that punishment and rescue are two sides of the same maladaptive coin. When we exclusively rely on punishment or rescue (or DISMISSAL) as our only responses to our child's big feelings, we inadvertently rob our children of opportunities to build their resilience. It's essential to be there for your child when they're in pain without resorting to rescuing them from it. It's also essential not to punish or dismiss big feelings as this is always felt as rejection from the parent. Rejection only feeds the inner turmoil and creates bigger problems in the future.
Pulling our child in, with arms wide open, and supporting them through the rough parts of life is how they will become resilient adults. And in our resilience - we find the path that leads us to our happiest life.
