Manage episode 384627677 series 2969942
My special guest on this episode of The Music Mind Podcast is a professional drummer of more than 40 years experience based in Sydney Australia.
Gordon Rytmeister has been a leading drummer working in a wide range of performance and recording situations including extended periods in the television bands on some of the highest profile shows on Australian national TV. Gordon has further toured nationally and internationally with top tier artists across a wide variety of styles from jazz to rock and pop.
He has regularly appeared at the Sydney Opera House and is a former drummer in the Don Burrows Quartet, a ground breaking unit that highlighted the extraordinary talents of Don Burrows and George Golla, two of the pioneers of jazz in Australia.
In this conversation Gordon discusses highly valuable topics including playing with click tracks, the challenges of performing live, setting in ear monitor mixes to enable the best performance possible, playing in musical theater shows, formal qualifications vs the real life scenario of securing performance gigs, what it means to be an endorsed Yamaha Artist and the challenges of earning a living in the changing work place that is impacting musicians worldwide.
Gordon also discusses studying at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music, his long term associations with leading Australian musicians including Jazz Maestro James Morrison, Musical Director John Foreman, and the likes of ex Little River Band lead vocalist Glenn Shorrock.
Finally viewers get to see and hear Gordon perform a beautiful duet on snare drum, high hats and brushes with Brian Hayes on tenor saxophone playing an unaccompanied version of the jazz standard 'Bye Bye Blackbird'.
