In this episode of ‘The Live Free Experience,’ Briana Bowley chats with combat sports veteran and founder of Boars Martial Arts (Adelaide, South Australia), Darren Gangell. Darren gives us the exclusive story as to what drives Boars Martial Arts and shares some of his beliefs around combat sports as a whole.
Darren Gangell began his journey in Martial Arts in the 1970’s. At 8 years old, he begun Tae Kwon Do, followed by Tokoni for 4 years. Darren then went on to run his own club, PilbSung Martial Arts (meaning ‘victory over death’) for 8 years.
Committing to kickboxing for 3 years, before a back injury had him unable to kick, Darren began a 4.5 year journey in competitive boxing, before finding ‘street style’ karate and committing to it for 29 years.
In 1995 Darren founded Boars Martial Arts. He has dabbled in Muay Thai over many years, but in the last 10 years has fully immersed himself, travelling to Thailand 2-3 times a year to train and coach there.
Having cross trained across many disciplines, Darren has also worked with police and government departments in different aspects of defence and was also private security for government officials.
