14:12Welcome to another enlightening episode of "What Does George Say?" where we dive into the pressing question of student retention in education. In this episode, George addresses a thought-provoking question from Paul, a listener from Arkansas, who is concerned about students' ability to retain information from one class to the next. George explores the importance of understanding over mere retention of facts. Drawing on various analogies, such as learning to play an instrument, he highlights the fundamental role of mastering basics to achieve a deeper level of knowledge and wisdom. This episode delves into studies contrasting the effectiveness of different note-taking methods and their impact on recollection and comprehension. Join George as he unfolds the debate on whether retention should be the ultimate goal in education, or should educators aim for a profound understanding of content. Filled with insights, the discussion offers practical advice for teachers on fostering meaningful learning experiences and encourages listeners to share their thoughts and questions. Dive into this compelling exploration of education innovation and leadership. In the first episode, of What Does George Say (working title), George Couros answers a question that was asked through a Google Form he shared in a recent blog post! The question asked, “How do you support staff who you know are valuable in your school, but their ability to be dependable (not showing up or giving very late notice for not coming in) and being on time is a consistent concern? Also how do you support them while not lowering the bar for your other employees?” If you are wondering what “George Says” about this topic, be sure to listen to or watch this episode of The Innovator’s Mindset Podcast! Find it here on Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/Hidden-Potential-Science-Achieving-Greater/dp/0593676734/ref=tmm_pap_swatch_0?_encoding=UTF8&qid=&sr= In this year-end reflection, George Couros shares insights from Adam Grant's book "Hidden Potential: The Science of Achieving Greater Things." Although this book is not a new release, Couros emphasizes the book's relevance to personal growth and learning, particularly for educators. Be sure to check out this episode for three of Couros’ takeaways from this reading! Quotes: “The way you like to learn is what makes you comfortable, but it isn’t necessarily how you learn best. Sometimes, you even learn better in the mode that makes you the most uncomfortable, because you have to work harder at it. This is the first form of courage: being brave enough to embrace discomfort and throw your learning style out the window.” - Adam Grant “It’s easy for people to be critics or cheerleaders. It’s harder to get them to be coaches. A critic sees your weaknesses and attacks your worst self. A cheerleader sees your strengths and celebrates your best self. A coach sees your potential and helps you become a better version of yourself.” - Adam Grant “Character is more than just having principles. It's a learned capacity to live by your principles.” -Adam Grant Links: Hidden Potential by Adam Grant (Amazon Link) - https://www.amazon.com/Hidden-Potential-Science-Achieving-Greater/dp/0593676734/ref=tmm_pap_swatch_0?_encoding=UTF8&qid=&sr=…

15:47In this special edition of The Innovator’s Mindset Podcast, George Couros shares his experience watching the movie "Wicked" with his daughter, Kallea. Couros reflects on the emotional impact of the film and shares three key takeaways from his experience: the value of giving first impressions a second chance, the importance of supporting others even when they are not present, and how childhood experiences shape our futures. Be sure to listen or watch this episode to hear how the Wicked soundtrack has helped Couros while he runs! Take-Aways: Give a first impression a second chance. Applaud and cheer on others even when they are not in the room. Our hurt and hopes in childhood can shape a lot of the future. You just need someone to believe in you. __________________________________________ Please share your thoughts with us on Twitter or Instagram at #InnovatorsMindset. Couros reflects on the challenges faced by educators today, including overwhelming demands and the need for authentic leadership, highlighting the significance of student input in shaping educational practices and the necessity for principals to maintain integrity and transparency. Quotes: “Being an authentic leader means leading with honest and sincere intentions while maintaining a high level of integrity.” - Dr. Marcus J. Belin “To truly transform the educational experience, school leaders must actively involve students in the decision-making process. By creating platforms for student voice, such as student councils, advisory boards, or regular feedback sessions, leaders empower students to contribute their perspectives, ideas, and aspirations. This not only fosters a sense of ownership and engagement but also ensures that decisions are made with a deep understanding of student needs and aspirations.” - Dr. Mary Hemphill “The point is, it's not what you have when you lead at school. It's what you do with what you have. It's not the plane. It's the pilot.” -Mike Kleba “If you are considering trying something new in your school, ask the people you serve what they believe is no longer needed. And if the answer is, ‘Well, there is nothing that we are doing currently that we can feasibly get rid of,’ then maybe the answer becomes not to take on that new initiative or idea.” -George Couros Links: Books by Allyson Apsey - https://allysonapsey.com/books/ What Makes a Great Principal - https://www.amazon.com/What-Makes-Great-Principal-Leadership/dp/1948334739 __________________________________________ Please share your thoughts with us on Twitter or Instagram at #InnovatorsMindset. 12:36George Couros reflects on a book he read while he was training for the Disney Marathon! In this episode, you will hear Couros share three thoughts from the book, Run the Mile You’re In by Ryan Hall. Be sure to check out this episode for a heartwarming story about how the ideas shared by Hall connected to Couros’ beloved dog, Odom. Quotes: “I believe that we each have a mission to accomplish and that we have been designed in such a way that we are not lacking anything to accomplish it. Everything we need is already inside of us. We just have to find it and figure out how to cultivate it.” - Ryan Hall “I had to remind myself to celebrate others’ achievements because what makes me special, important, or of worth has nothing to do with my or anyone else’s performance. I shouldn’t look down on myself for not doing as well as someone else because the goal isn’t to be better than everyone else. My goal, when I was at my best, was always to be the best version of me that I could be. I found that if I was inspired by the breakthrough of others, then often those breakthroughs became my catalyst for believing I could do it too and experiencing my own breakthroughs.” - Ryan Hall “Sometimes our biggest victories aren’t the races we win. Sometimes they’re the personal battles we win along the way.” - Ryan Hall Links: The OC - https://www.theoc.net/ Run the Mile You’re In (Book on Amazon) - https://www.amazon.com/Run-Mile-Youre-Finding-Every/dp/0310354374 __________________________________________ Please share your thoughts with us on Twitter or Instagram at #InnovatorsMindset. 17:56This is based on the weekly email from George Couros that you can find here: https://mailchi.mp/7a6862cb6558/something-personal-professional-and-profound-email-15554026 A Snippet from the email: If you find yourself looking to be reaffirmed in your thinking, it might feel good, but eventually, it can lead you to making decisions that don't benefit you or your community. It is essential to recognize that being challenged doesn't always mean changing your position or, more importantly, your principles and values. Sometimes, understanding the viewpoints and perspectives of others can actually help reaffirm your thoughts and solidify your position, offering a differing perspective that may teach you how to present your ideas better. But I have learned that if you are focused on always being right, you will surround yourself with those who agree with you. If you want to do what is right, you will look to find those who challenge you. That is the best way to keep your ego in check. __________________________________________ Please share your thoughts with us on Twitter or Instagram at #InnovatorsMindset.
