Aronofsky Chapter One Pt. One: Pi
TGTPU SEASON 11 returns to form with our classic (or outdated) temporal pincer movement to cover the entirety of (yes, all eight) wide release films of director Darren Aronofsky.
Hosts Ken and Thomas with guest Ryan - pause, pop pills, make a note - kick off the inaugural episode of the new season with Aronofsky’s first feature film, PI (1998), a black-and-white low-budget masterpiece clocking in at an economical 1hour 23minutes & 45seconds.
Pioneering an editing technique Aronofsky coined “hip-hop montage,” the film - pause, pop pills, make note - scored by Clint Mansell and shot by Matthew Libatique, both of whom will collaborate with Aronofsky on five later (75% of Aronofsky’s) films, follows the obsessive life of Max Cohen, a super anxious math genius, played by Sean Gullette bearing a strong resemblance to the lead singer of Live once he shaves his head who - pause, pop pills, make note - may have uncovered a secret pattern to the universe. Getting pressure from both Wall Street in an effort to game the system with a new super microchip and a cabal of Hasidic Jews looking for mathematical meaning in the Torah - pause, take pills, see wild and crazy stuff that may not be real, make note - Max and the viewer are left to wonder: Is the pattern he finds is a gift from God or a curse? All this cultivates in, well, among this week’s three hosts, an argument on how the movie ends, the merits of trepanning, which of Aronofsky’s scarves is the best, and if this first film to allow for internet downloading might have also originated crowdsourcing.
Also note is our new format: TGTPTU will be releasing episodes discussing just one movie (instead of having both movies of our pairings released in a single episode). We welcome feedback.
Also note (before drilling your skull): this summary’s precisely 314 words.
