Meet Mariamu Sillah - the vibrant, Gambian, Bronx bred native redefining what it means to be a West African woman in the public eye. Mariamu Sillah is the walking embodiment of embracing one’s dual identities all while pushing through the hustle and bustle of New York City. Raised within the confinements of a strict Gambian-Muslim household, Mariamu often felt trapped by cultural expectations placed her both at home and from her community. Forced to navigate between two worlds, she spent most of her childhood figuring out what being both African and American meant to her. On this week’s podcast, we sit down with Mariamu to unpack generational trauma, growing pains and how therapy has aided in her healing process.
