Mrs Gardiner is doing a good job to keep morale high amongst the Bennet girls. As word has spread around the town it comes to light that Wickham is indebted to almost every tradesperson in town. Mr Gardiner, on his arrival in London, find Mr Bennet and immediately writes to Longborne to enlighten them on the news of the hunt. Nothing has turned up. Several days go by, and no more letters from Mr Gardiner have come. Mr Collins has however sent a letter to Mr Bennet. It says that he and Mrs Collins are saddened to hear of the news of Lydia’s behaviour. He also says that he believes it would be wise of Mr Bennet to kick Lydia from the family, as such a disgrace as hers could not and should never be forgiven. The next day the family receives a final letter from Mr Gardiner, saying that Mr Bennet is coming home, and that they have still not found any sign of Wickham, and that no one can be found that could give any information about where he could have gone. When Mr Bennet gets home, he is incredibly upset that he could not find his daughter, and though Lizzy and the other Bennet girls try to cheer him up and say that it isn’t his fault. He is hurt but does manage to make a joke to kitty about her never being allowed to leave the house again, and most definitely not with an Officer.
