Oxxo, a major convenience store chain in Mexico, has been forced to close numerous locations and gas stations due to escalating cartel violence and extortion. This situation has been particularly severe in states such as Guanajuato, Jalisco, and Tamaulipas, where organized crime groups have targeted these stores with arson attacks and threats.
In Irapuato, Guanajuato, armed gang members set around 20 Oxxo stores ablaze as part of coordinated terror attacks. Similarly, in Michoacán, several Oxxo stores were burned down in a series of violent incidents, prompting the chain to close its operations in the city of Apatzingán. In Tamaulipas, all 191 Oxxo stores in Nuevo Laredo were shut down indefinitely due to persistent violence and security concerns.
These closures highlight the broader issue of insecurity in Mexico, where extortion and cartel violence have significantly impacted businesses and everyday life. President López Obrador has acknowledged the severity of the problem, noting that extortion is one of the most challenging crimes to combat in the country, but still unable to offer an solutions to a beleaguered population.
