In this week's episode we have Mark Stephens, best selling author of The Coach Approach: A Better Way to Lead in Business and Beyond in Frederick, Maryland! The book teaches you how to be a better listener, communicator, and ask powerful questions. Mark was born and raised in the DMV area, originally from Bowie, Maryland and later on he moved to Frederick and has been living there for the past 21 years. He graduated in Computer Science from Salisbury University and did it for 5 years afterwards but was seeking more interaction with people than just sitting in a cubicle. Eventually got into coaching and coached wrestling and girls lacrosse for 15 years. Until one day he felt he was hitting a glass ceiling and wanted to grow and decided to hire a coach and it changed his life that afterwards he became a coach himself. He mentions how part of having a coach is that you have someone who is holding you accountable. Mark shares a recent example on an airplane flight back home he was sitting next to a college student who was on her way to her first conference, he was actively listening, asking questions, and gave her a different perspective on how to think and what to ask when she arrived at the conference and at the end she felt valued. Stay curious, listen, and ask great questions. He mentions how the idea of the book came about, he started writing the book during the pandemic and it was hard but he finally finished and it recently came out and became a best seller! We chat about having a growth mindset, the importance of writing goals down, creating win-win situations, and how not develop followers and instead develop leaders and much more!
