Do you work hard, hoping your hard work will be noticed & recognized? Are you ever frustrated when it’s not? Do you feel uncomfortable talking about yourself? Are you concerned sharing your accomplishments will seem arrogant?

I’ve been there, & my friend & this week’s guest, Susan M. Barber, has been there, too.

As a former Fortune 500 IT Director turned Executive Coach, Author & Podcast Host, Sue experienced her own challenges throughout her 25+ years in the corporate environment at Kraft Heinz. Now, Sue helps business leaders play bigger, increase their visibility & shine a light on their leadership strengths so they can elevate their position in the workplace.

As a leader who was somewhat invisible for a long time, she took a journey to learn how to be visible in her own authentic way. Her mission is to share what she learned with others & leverage her platform to create a visibility movement for leaders to show their value & be seen for their true talent.

In this episode, Sue & I discuss:

  • What led her to starting her own business, writing a book & becoming a published author
  • Vulnerability...the necessity of it & the challenges associated with it
  • Imperfect action
  • Identity shifts & her own shift away from a company where family members had worked for years
  • Shifting from auto pilot to dreaming & considering possibilities
  • The fear of doing anything for the first time & trusting you’ll figure it out, even when you initially don’t know “how”
  • Her own invisibility in the first draft of her book, The Visibility Factor
  • Listening to the stories that hold us back
  • The RISE framework illustrated in her book, including self-reflection, even when it’s uncomfortable
  • Some tactical tips for becoming more visible that don’t require additional time
  • What holds us back from being visible
  • Why performance should be only 10% of your focus when it comes to career success, & what the remaining 90% of your focus should be (as Harvey J. Coleman shares in Empowering Yourself: The Organizational Game Revealed)
  • Being respected vs liked
  • The necessity of asking for help
