With the end of football season comes the rebuild for next year. Whether you’re pulling magnets off of a depth chart board, or just erasing names in an Excel document, most of us are identifying the starters for Week 1 2024.

The QB is THE MOST IMPORTANT position you can fill this year, and every year. But, how do you identify who should be playing for you? And how do you develop them this offseason to ensure they’ll have the tools to succeed?

What QB skills are you looking for when evaluating players?

  • Leadership skills - alpha
  • Ability to be calm in big moments - helps if have been multi-sport guy
  • Knowledge of the game - arm ability - running ability


What’s the best method to develop your QB’s?

  • Strength he has that can be showcased
  • What are areas he can improve in his throwing
  • Reps and competitions


What skills do you work and how do you teach them?

  • Pocket awareness drills
  • Footwork for throwing the ball
  • Anticipation drills - how to read the defense
  • Understanding route concepts
  • Reading/identifying coverages


What NOT to do as a Coach

  • Today’s Lesson: “Don’t pick a QB based off looks”
