July 19, 2010- At the turn of the millenium, NSYNC and Backstreet Boys were at the top of the pop culture food chain and reporting on it all from the front row was MTV VJ, Dave Holmes. On the other side of the aisle was The Baub Show's host and a friend of the band, Bob Merrick. What was uncanny was how the two resembled each other, causing fans to often mistake Merrick as the popular MTV host (a fact that was featured prominently on the original planetbaub site with side by side comparisons on a page entitled, "I am not Dave Holmes"). On tonight's show, Bob and Dave finally meet and chat for the very first time and catch up with Dave's latest adventures, including his new blog, "My Year Of Everything", where he is spending a year reading books by people who took a year off to do something and then writing his own book about it! Co-hosting tonight will be Sherry Layne, who is premiering her brand new Baub Show exclusive web series, "Quantum Sleep" and another new regular series from Eric Shane! DAVE HOLMES No one likes to lose a contest, but itâ??s especially embarrassing when itâ??s on national television. Lucky for Dave Holmes, the runner-up in MTVâ??s first Wanna Be A VJ contest in 1998, sometimes fate fixes it all in the end. Even though he wasnâ??t selected as a VJ through the contest, Holmes did end up with a gig at MTV. He was first set to host a short-lived program titled â??I Spy Videoâ?? before he took on the popular â??Say What? Karaoke.â?? He also appeared on the channelâ??s â??120 Minutesâ?? as well as a VJ introducing â??Spanking Newâ?? videos and other hot tunes. But before hitting the small screen, Holmes, 36, studied right here in Worcester. He attended the College of the Holy Cross, where he worked for the campus radio station surely a prelude to his later work and reputation as a pop-culture sage with an encyclopedic knowledge of music Post-MTV, Holmes tried his hand at acting. You can catch him as a reporter in the first â??Fantastic Fourâ?? film as well as Leslie Frost on a few episodes of â??Reno 911!â?? But itâ??s hosting that Holmes, with his good-natured style, does best: he did a brief stint as the MC for â??Fire Me ... Pleaseâ?? on CBS as well as some spots for VH1â??s â??Best Week Everâ?? and specials on E!. He also co-hosts Court TVâ??s â??Saturday Night Solutionâ?? shows and FXâ??s DVD on TV. Most recently, on July 7, he co-hosted the Live Earth concert coverage on July 7 for Bravo. It doesnâ??t get much bigger than that, hosting a history-making concert that spans seven continents. So with a pretty impressive Hollywood resume especially for someone who started as an unknown in an MTV contest Holmes proves that sometimes losing can bring a bigger prize than winning. written by Bobby Hankinson
