The Cynz
Manage episode 435321561 series 3592923
A full throttle rock band, formed around the songwriting talents of Cyndi Dawson and Henry Seiz, this might just be their strongest material ever. They “really sunk their guts into it in a more vulnerable way and grew more introspective and insightful.”
The poetic lyrics are tales about finding your way in life and the context is semi-autobiographical using some artistic license. It is a moving CD, with 11 songs, including two covers.
Based in New Jersey, Cyndi Dawson and Henry Seiz have a longstanding partnership. She was a teenager when they first met and became friends. They front The Cynz and are the songwriters and composers. It’s no wonder their chemistry ignites audiences. Ultimately, the listener can expect a total sonic and cerebral experience.
The album is based on Cyndi’s preadult life when she was on her own, trying to stay safe in rather risky environments. At the age of 17, she started acting, dancing and modeling in NYC, all during a confusing, complicated time. Writing about the past gave Cyndi a chance to purge, and she found a sensitivity that was softer. She realized one can not move forward without coming to terms with some issues.
“What I love about this record is that we explored new directions musically and went to very new places lyrically. I probably let myself be the most vulnerable I've ever been on this record.” Cyndi Dawson
While the songwriters do not try to sound like anyone in particular, they realize that everyone who records has influences come through their music. Musically, Henry gave the album hints of The Byrds and sounds of the ‘80s.
“Crow Haired Boys” is a track completely about that era when Cyndi would frequent the clubs in NYC with her then-boyfriend. They would go to Danceteria, Palladium, etc. Then there are some real rockers on the record that probably were influenced by bands such as: Distillers, Joan Jett, Patti Smith, and X.
Recording took place at The House of Vibes in Highland Park, NJ. Producer Kurt Reil of The Grip Weeds was helpful in bringing out the best in the band and worked on most of the CD. The album is mixed in a way that Cyndi’s vocals are easily understood. You might find yourself singing along!
The band produced ‘Tell That Girl to Shut Up’, and Michael Giblin of ‘Split Squad’ produced ‘Narrow Hips’, co-produced ‘Room Without a View,’ and added some back up vocals.
The band features Cyndi (lead vocals), Henry (guitar), Dave U. Hall (bass), Mike Wretched (drums), and The Jelly Bricks’ Tommy Kristich (drums on ‘Room’ and ‘Narrow Hips.’) In addition, Jim Babjak of The Smithereens came to the studio and put some rockin' lead guitar and background bits on ‘Room.’
Cyndi is known as a visual on-stage tsunami. “She leads the band through shamanic rock and roll rights of passage. Her raw emotional stage presence along with the band’s edgy powerful vibe is truly an experience.”
“Our live shows are intensely energetic. There's a chemistry that moves me, a collective alchemy between our audiences and us. I like to be playful onstage and Henry goes into the guitar zone.” Cyndi Dawson
