Monitoring and managing key inputs such as irrigation and nutrients can lead to improved productivity and reduced input costs on farm, ultimately improving a grower's bottom line. Tune in to this podcast where Soil Wealth ICP team member Carl Larsen chats to industry experts Ivor Gaylard (Swan Systems), Medi Zaboli (Sentek) and Doris Blaseing (RMCG/Soil Wealth ICP) for some practical tips. This project has been funded by Hort Innovation using the vegetable research and development levy and contributions from the Australian Government. In this podcast vegetable grower Jake Ryan, from Three Ryans in Western Australia, speaks about the journey to transition the farm's fallow and conventional cultivation to strip-till. Jake was impressed with the substantial time and cost savings of the strip-till method alongside the use of cover crops, combined with observable improvements in soil health. The cover crop and strip-till combination makes the transition from cover crop to broccoli much more manageable and helps lock in the benefits from cover crops. The demonstration trial allowed the Three Ryans to work through the practical challenges of replacing their usual fallow and conventional cultivation with a cover crop and strip-till combination and they have since transitioned to growing all of their vegetables using this approach. This project has been funded by Hort Innovation using the vegetable research and development levy and contributions from the Australian Government. In this podcast, John Coulombe, Head of Training and Development at Complete AUV and the Virtual Drone Academy, provides valuable information and sound advice regarding the rules, regulations and responsibilities for those using drones in the horticultural industry. John has spent over eight years working in horticulture and, since branching out into drone training and consulting, has worked for the Australian Defence Force, Burnett Mary Regional Group, Growcom and MLA, among other businesses and individuals. For further details go to the website: https://dronetrainingsolutions.com.au/ PLEASE NOTE: It is now an offence to fly an unregistered remotely piloted aircraft (RPA), commonly referred to as a drone, for anything other than sport or recreation. Kim Ngov grows snow peas on trellises with the alleys heavily infested with weeds and the added problem of heavy foot traffic causing the soil to become soggy following rainfall. Recently, Kim took up the suggestion from the SoilWealth & ICP team of seeding cover crops into the alleys of snow pea for weed suppression, creating an easier working environment for his staff and reducing the reliance on herbicides and minimising the exposure of chemicals to personnel, crops and the environment. This project is supported by Applied Horticultural Research, through funding from the Australian Government’s National Landcare Program. Soil biology is a complex, dynamic and broad field. This podcast will introduce you to the concept of why biology is important to soil fertility and maximising crop production. We also briefly explore the complexities, risks and potential of biological crop products. This podcast was developed in conjunction with our Soil Wealth ICP Partnership Network members Sustainable Farming Systems (SFS) and KimiTech. This project has been funded by Hort Innovation using the vegetable research and development levy and contributions from the Australian Government. Hort Innovation is the grower-owned, not-for-profit research and development corporation for Australian horticulture…

Agronomists, Dr Pieter Van Nieuwenhuyse and Marc Hinderager, discuss the outcomes from a case study carried out on a pumpkin farm in Bathurst, NSW. You will hear how inter-row ground cover may assist you in suppressing weeds and a more integrated approach, using cover crops and strip-till, might help you reduce the use of herbicides and, by not disturbing the soil, better water infiltration rates and moisture retention will result. To view the case study document on this trial, please click here . This podcast looks at the value of on-farm trials, and the support given to practice change by membership of a grower group. We meet two Tasmanian farmers, Rebecca Addison and Yuri Wolfert, who trialled mixed cover crops for soil health before potatoes in 2019; with the support of grower group Soil First Tasmania, and funding from Landcare Tasmania. They speak about the challenges and teachings from their trials and what they will do differently in the future. The Soil Wealth and Integrated Crop Protection project is following and supporting grower groups like Soil First Tasmania as an important path of practice change. We also collected soil visual data from the trial of mixed cover crops, which you can also watch here . Over the past two years, Victorian vegetable growing operation Schreurs & Sons and the Soil Wealth ICP team have partnered to explore the application of precision agriculture in celery, leek and baby leaf production systems. The demonstration site is located at Adam Schreurs’ Cora Lynn farm, about 80km south-east of Melbourne, Victoria. During that time, Adam and the team have aimed to improve nutrition, irrigation and drainage management, and insect pest and beneficial monitoring as a basis for soil and crop health. To achieve this, a range of technology was used including EM38 mapping, gridded soil sampling, variable rate fertiliser spreading, remote monitoring of insect pests and beneficial identification traps with cameras, as well as drones. This podcast explores some of the key demonstration site findings and lessons from 2018 to 2020. You can also read the accompanying case study that showcases more detailed results.
