In this episode, I’m honored to speak with Jane Clark. She is the author of ‘Story Carrier,’ a memoir that captures her experience of intentionally rewriting her mother code. We discuss how stories are a vehicle to enlightenment, healing, and transformation, the importance of women using their voices, and a powerful reframe for generational trauma.

Jane began the mother code journey after her first baby was born. Wanting to be a different kind of mother than her own, she knew she had to understand the layers of the mother code in her lineage to move past them. She shares the secrets she uncovered from her family’s past and how they continue to live in her bones.

One of the longest threads uncovered was of silence and shame around perceived trauma. Jane proposes we rewrite the shame of generational trauma stories to regain agency, step into our voice, and honor our family. Women especially have a long history of being silent and facing persecution if they weren’t. Her book investigates the stories of silence in her family, the irrepressible energy a story can carry, and the wisdom of a story that can’t be told but only experienced.

This process of self-discovery through writing and story is truly revolutionary. Jane shares a poignant experience working as a journalist confronted with patriarchal narratives meant to silence women that she refused to be silent about. Jane’s work with stories is a powerful reminder of the force that arises when we consciously turn toward our stories, and I hope after this episode, you find a new way to turn toward yours.
