In this episode, I’m talking to Alex Clapp, an incredible individual who faced unimaginable challenges that turned his world upside down.

Alex was living the life many of us know well — working hard, playing hard — with what seemed like a "normal" relationship with alcohol. Then, five years ago, his life took a dramatic turn. In the midst of battling sight loss, Alex turned to alcohol as a way to cope with his emotions and the uncertainty of his future.

Today, Alex bravely shares his story of hitting rock bottom and the long road to recovery. We talk about how alcohol became his way of avoiding emotions and the turning point that led him to seek help. We reflect on the importance of accepting vulnerability, the stigma around asking for help, and how he eventually found a path to sobriety and healing.

Here are the highlights:

(3:50) Alex's Initial Life and Diagnosis

(12:01) Turning to Alcohol and Struggles with Addiction

(18:02) Attempts at Rehabilitation and Relapse

(18:37) Final Rehabilitation and Acceptance

(29:56) Establishing Clarity and Promoting Alcohol-Free Events

More about Alex:

Alex Clapp has owned multiple businesses in the North West, including his flagship firm, County Cost Consultant, for 24 years. In the costs law sector, County Cost has retained its longevity due to his forward thinking and versatility. Earlier this year, Alex co-founded Claritee, a corporate wellness company comprising no alcohol corporate events, bespoke corporate training, and keynote speaking.

Claritee was born from Alex’s struggle with addiction, which developed as a result of a deteriorating eye condition in 2015. With no confirmed diagnosis, Alex turned to alcohol to cope with his mental health, hiding his affliction from family, friends, and peers. Thankfully, after seeking help, Alex attended multiple rehabilitation centres and has been sober for two years. Through his own challenges, Alex has aimed to help others in similar situations—particularly those in the corporate sphere who may be struggling to admit vulnerabilities. Claritee’s mission is to provide services that encourage individuals to prioritise their wellbeing and instill practices to maintain positive mindsets.
