If you have PPPD, MdDS, vestibular migraine, other medically unexplained dizziness symptoms, or non-dizziness symptoms like tinnitus, hyperacusis or pain, chances are that you will recover more easily if you work with ALL things driving your symptoms. Here on the channel we talk a lot about reactions to symptoms, but that is only one (very important) piece of recovery from chronic dizziness and other medically unexplained symptoms. Specifically, life stressors, difficulties in relationships, longstanding patterns in how you relate to yourself, and other sources of emotional distress can and do drive nervous system sensitivity that can keep chronic symptoms going.
In this conversation with Dr. Brandon Yarns, MD, a board-certified geriatric psychiatrist, researcher and assistant professor at UCLA, we talk about an evidence-based way of addressing these other sources of emotional distress - specifically FOR physical symptoms - called Emotional Awareness & Expression Therapy. We talk about why feeling and expressing emotions can be so helpful for physical symptom recovery, and we discuss practical ways of “processing” emotions to help you on your recovery. Please keep in mind that this podcast is separate from Dr. Yarns’ clinical and research roles. His opinions are his own and do not reflect the views of the VA, the US government or the University of California.
