Hello, Red and Blue footy fans! And welcome to the 2022/23 season. While it may be a new season, some of the same old problems persist for both of our clubs.

Chelsea started things off with an underwhelming and sometimes uneasy victory over their former boss and club legend Frank Lampard away at Everton. And were it not for some truly unfortunate injuries for the home side the result could have been worse for the Teutonic Tuchel’s men. There were some bright spots among the new boys, but without a proven goal scorer coming soon the visit of a free-flowing, high-scoring Spurs followed by a trip to Leeds United of America could spell trouble.

If Chelsea’s first match victory despite not playing well can be taken as a positive, it’s much harder to find the silver lining in Manchester United’s cloudy Sunday. Things looked very bright indeed for the first 10 minutes or so, with the fans singing and players buzzing about. Perhaps if Bruno’s early chance hadn’t bobbled in front of him and found the net instead, we might be having a different discussion. But the reality is that the same issues of poor organization, cheap giveaways, and dismal defending plagued United throughout. There was some improvement with Eriksen dropping deeper in the 2ndhalf, but the job in front of the new Dutch manager is well and truly massive. The ugliness off the pitch continues as well, with haphazard transfer speculation and a mooted hostile takeover all commanding headlines. A visit to Brentford might warm a lot of hearts, but Liverpool is on the horizon.
