AI is dividing members of Congress based on how they feel it should be regulated. As a result, Congress may concede regulatory power to the Biden Administration, which has proven more efficient in developing regulatory framework for AI.

In episode 20 of Complications: Health Policy Unraveled, host Stephanie Kennan discusses AI-related congressional actions from last year and what’s on the horizon for this year. Walking through proposed pieces of legislation in both the House and the Senate, Stephanie highlights areas of Congressional focus in the AI sphere. However, since it’s an election year, Congress will likely find it quite difficult to achieve all its ambitious AI-related goals. Tune in to this episode to learn more.

[4:26] Stephanie walks through the numerous Senate bills concerning AI that have been recently proposed, which could update federal regulation to meet the needs of AI, expand access, update patent eligibility, and address public health threats posed by AI.

[6:56] In the House, proposed legislation would investigate the impact of AI on the job market, prohibit discrimination by AI algorithms, and create a new licensing framework.

[8:34] Senator Bill Cassidy published a white paper in September to gather feedback on how Congress can effectively mitigate risk and leverage benefits of AI as it relates to health, education and workforce sectors.

[9:35] For now, it seems Congress is divided in how it wants to approach AI regulation, but with the election fast-approaching, there may not be enough time to get proposed bills passed.
