The Kimberley Community Alcohol and Drug Service is commonly referred to as KCADS. KCADS is one part of the integrated Kimberley Mental Health Drug Service. KCADS provide drug and alcohol counselling support and prevention activities across the Kimberley. KCADS is supporting the Recovery Mob to promote self-help in a supportive group setting. The Recovery Mob is a support group that provides people who are concerned about their relationship with alcohol or drugs to come and be in a safe place to talk about their drug/alcohol use and to learn ways to live with or change their use. Recovery Mob is what we call a harm minimization program. That means people don’t need to have stopped using drugs or alcohol. It is a place where they can come and discuss making changes to their use and explore how they might do that. Our role is to provide a safe and supportive environment where the people attending the session feel safe to talk about their concerns and how or what changes may be made. The Recovery Mob is what we call a peer led support group. It is the support and sharing of the whole group that makes the difference. They build support and get support from each other. People come and talk about their drug and alcohol use and the impact it has on their lives. The important conversations are about building and keeping up the motivation to change, or it can be about coping with the urges and cravings. Other conversations can be about managing thoughts feelings and behaviours. Anybody that lives in the Broome township is welcome to come no matter your lived experience and it is free to attend. We meet Monday Nights from 5.00pm to 7.00pm at the Broome Recovery Centre at 39 Forrest St Broome. At 5pm we gather for a cup of tea then move into the program for the night. People can just rock up to the Recovery Centre on the night, or give me a ring to find out more at KCADS on 08 9195 2433 What if someone feels too shame to share their experience? You don’t have to share, you can come along and listen. A lot of people need some time to suss out a new group and see if they are comfortable. So people would be able to work at their own pace Absolutely people can come and see how it fits for them.
