In the third installment of this episode, I examine social isolation from an ‘Alternative Perspective’ by focusing on a unique and challenging phenomenon called Hikikomori. The problem of Japan’s Hikikomori first began to be investigated during the 1970s but only came to prominence by the late 1990s largely due to the Japanese stock market crash and economic recession of the late 1980s. My interest in this remarkable condition is twofold; Firstly, it represents an extreme form of social withdrawal, and it provides insight on why certain groups of people gravitate towards the outer limits of isolation. Secondly, I draw parallels with certain aspects of Hikikomori in relation to my own debilitating experience of social withdrawal.

The word Hikikomori is a composite term, comprising two separate meanings. First (Hiku) refers to ‘pulling back’ and (Komoru) refers to ‘seclusion of the self.’ Hence, its literal meaning is “pulling inwards of the self” and it refers to a person's deliberate seclusion from mainstream society. According to experts in the field of psychology, it is estimated that as many as one million Japanese adolescents and young adults have withdrawn from society by not going to school or work. Instead they retreat to their rooms for months or years and consequently severe almost all ties to the outside world.

I provide context to the Hikikomori phenomenon by first explaining the dilemma of Japan’s aging population and declining birth rate. Moreover, in the absence of a standard definition of Hikikomori, eminent psychologists believe there are three accompanying criteria of marked social isolation which help to define this unique condition. Other experts argue that a typical profile of Hikikomori can be formulated based on clinical evaluations using an inter-connected series of psychiatric symptoms.

I further elaborate by explaining the four main underlying causes of Hikikomori and inevitably this leads us to ask an important question. Has the phenomenon spread beyond Japan’s national boundaries?
