Orientation is a new work from writer/director Chye-Ling Huang exploring sex and race in Aotearoa. It opens September 5 and tickets are on sale now.

In this conversation, host Saraid Cameron and guest Chye-Ling Huang discuss the complex, frustrating and often hilariously stupefying situations throw up in present-day dating involving the intersections of race, skin colour, sex and identity in this modern minefield.

More about Orientation: A hot mess of sexual stereotypes, no Asian man is left un-turned in Mei’s quest to root herself back to her roots. When a shock event leaves her questioning everything about love, Chinese-Pākehā Mei dives ferociously back into the dating game. A film star from Singapore, an Indian Taika Waititi and the Asian answer to Channing Tatum lift the sheets on how sex and race collide in little old New Zealand, where Asianess is both fetishised and feared. An ensemble of the sexiest storytellers from the Asian diaspora play out your wildest dreams and cringiest tropes as Mei uncovers that love is simple but race is not.

NB: in this kōrero, Chye-Ling refers to Becky Kuek rehearsing the role of Mei, but this role is performed by Natasha Daniel during the season.
