LafargeHolcim is a major corporation with 90,000 employees working at 2,300 operating sites in 90 countries around the globe. They're in the business of cement, ready mix and pre-cast concrete, aggregates, paving, piping, construction and more. Health and safety is embedded in everything they do, from their daily plant routines and their customers’ project worksites to their actions in their neighboring communities. In this episode of the No Harm health and safety podcast, host Marvin Polis talks to Lafarge's Western Canadian VP of Ready Mix, Bruce Willmer about their road safety initiatives and collaboration with the City of Edmonton on the global Vision Zero initiative. Specifically, Lafarge has started to install under-guards on its Canadian ready mix trucks to help prevent serious incidents with pedestrians and cyclists. This is a strategy that has been successfully adopted in other parts of the world. Lafarge is also implementing an in-vehicle monitoring system (IVMS) to help the company understand root causes of incidents such as hard braking and cornering, as well as to assist drivers with blind spots. Other strategies are helping to make braking more effective. No Harm is the health and safety podcast for HSE professionals. We explore issues and initiatives to help you sharpen your professional skills and better understand emerging issues. The No Harm Podcast is hosted by Marvin Polis of Stimulant Strategies and Productions, a veteran producer of HSE video productions and publications for municipalities and corporations.
