Despite HPAI WDE Numbers Look Great - Interest Rate Drop Influences Dairy
Manage episode 440716330 series 2908402
This is the time of the year when all the hard work that gardeners and farmers of all types see their efforts pay off. Pam Jahnke visits with Liz Lyon, vegetable farm manager at Gwenyn Hill Farm in Waukesha. This farm is more than 400 acres strong in a largely urban setting. Lyon has 12 acres dedicated to intensive production of organic vegetables. She explains how she got started in the farming business and how the weather has impacted their productivity this year.
Numbers look strong for World Dairy Expo 2024. Laura Herschleb, general manager of WDE, visits with Pam Jahnke about the industry concerns over HPAI in dairy. Right now Herschleb says they're expecting nearly 3,000 head of cattle to be coming to the show - which is right on par. Each of those lactating dairy animals will be carrying specific health certification papers to ensure HPAI doesn't come into the state.
Mike North, commodity specialist with EverAg, joins Pam Jahnke to talk dairy markets. The lowering of interest rates by the Federal Reserve is bringing up interesting conversations in dairy circles. Feed costs are lower, and some coops are removing restrictive quotas because of tightening supplies.
