Um Themen wie Tod und Sterben würden viele Menschen wohl lieber den «Mantel des Schweigens» werfen, wie man so schön sagt. Wer allerdings in der Palliativmedizin beschäftigt ist, kann das kaum tun. Im Gegenteil, die Palliativmedizin oder lateinisch «cura palliativa» trägt das «Ummanteln» im Sinne des «Schützens» ihrer Patientinnen und Patienten schon im Namen. Auf Palliativmedizin sind Kranke angewiesen, deren Lebensende aufgrund weit vorangeschrittener Erkrankung naht und die keine Heilung mehr zur erwarten haben.
Menschen wie Prof. Dr. Winfried Hardinghaus, mit dem ich heute sprechen darf, haben es sich zur Aufgabe gemacht, Sterbende auf ihren letzten Meter zu begleiten und ihnen zusammen mit den Angehörigen beizustehen, wo sie nur können. Hardinghaus ist Facharzt für Innere Medizin und seit Beginn der 1990er Jahre Palliativmediziner. Er leitet die Klinik für Palliativmedizin am Franziskus-Krankenhaus in Berlin, ist Vorsitzender des Deutschen Hospiz- und PalliativVerbands.

Many people would probably prefer to keep a "cloak of silence", as the saying goes, around topics such as death and dying. However, those who work in palliative medicine can hardly do so. On the contrary, palliative medicine, or "cura palliativa" in Latin, has "cloaking" in the sense of "protecting" its patients in its very name. Patients whose end of life is approaching due to advanced illness and who can no longer expect a cure are dependent on palliative medicine.
People like Prof. Dr. Winfried Hardinghaus have made it their mission to accompany the dying on their final journey and, together with their relatives, to assist them wherever they can. Hardinghaus is a specialist in internal medicine and has been a palliative care physician since the early 1990s. He heads the Clinic for Palliative Medicine at Franziskus Hospital in Berlin and is Chairman of the German Hospice and Palliative Association.
