If national or regional literature merges into world literature, this does not mean that there has to be only one great world culture for it. World literature, this term coined by Goethe, denotes something that must first be made by turning to the culturally foreign. Michael Hampe explains why the METIS platform has dedicated itself to this term in order to make wisdom literature accessible to the world. These literatures mirror each other in certain widespread experiences of suffering, joy, hope, sorrow, war, etc. As we engage with the world's wisdom literature, we come to know each other and ourselves better.

Wenn nationale oder regionale Literatur in Weltliteratur aufgeht, dann heisst das nicht, dass es dafür nur noch eine grosse Weltkultur geben muss. Weltliteratur, dieser von Goethe geprägte Begriff bezeichnet etwas, das man durch Hinwendung zum kulturell Fremden erst machen muss. Michael Hampe erklärt, warum die METIS-Plattform sich diesem Begriff verschrieben hat, um die die Weisheitsliteratur der Welt zugänglich zu machen. Diese Literaturen spiegeln einander in bestimmten weit verbreiteten Erfahrungen des Leids, der Freude, der Hoffnung, der Sorge, des Kriegs, etc. Wenn wir uns mit der Weltliteratur des Weisheit beschäftigen, lernen wir einander und uns selbst besser kennen.
