In this episode, Dr. Karin Dumont discusses the pivotal work she has done in the field of addiction counseling. She covers her experience in the field, advice for other counselors, and how she integrates her faith into her work.

Dr. Karin Dumont is a Licensed Clinical Mental Health Counselor Supervisor, a National Certified Counselor, a Certified Clinical Mental Health Counselor, a Licensed Clinical Addiction Specialist, and an Approved Clinical Supervisor having earned a PhD in Professional Counseling in 2010. Dr. Dumont was inducted into Chi Sigma Iota Counseling Academic and Professional Honor Society International, the Rho Eta chapter of Liberty University in 2016. Dr. Dumont practiced for over 20 years in the profession of counseling, having specialized in addiction counseling, clinical community mental health counseling, and counseling at-risk youth. She has extensive experience in regular outpatient, intensive outpatient, and inpatient crisis stabilization and detox services. Dr. Dumont, also, has experience in the area of school counseling. She has taught as a faculty member in the CACREP accredited graduate clinical counseling program within the Department of Counselor Education and Family Studies at Liberty University for 14 years. Dr. Dumont has, also, taught undergraduate psychology at both Liberty University and Methodist University. In addition, she has taught undergraduate sociology at Liberty University.

Dr. Dumont played an instrumental part in the development of the Masters of Arts in Addiction Counseling program at Liberty University. Her teaching interests are comprised of clinical mental health aspects to include psychopathology and clinical diagnosis, group therapy, and addiction topics. Her research interests lie in the area of addiction and relationships, the role of attachment in development, and the impact of the supervision relationship in counseling students’ skill development. Dr. Dumont serves as co-chairperson on the advocacy committee for the Department of Counselor Education and Family Studies. This committee provides and addresses advocacy for the profession of counseling, mental health itself, along with a focus on how to improve the integration of advocacy into the counseling program coursework. She is also active as a student faculty advisor and provides supervision to students in internship. Along with service to counseling students, Dr. Dumont has recently taken on the service role of Narrative Writer for the NCMHCE with the National Board of Certified Counselors. She is active in presenting at workshops and conferences on mental health and addiction topics on the national, regional, state, and local level. She has also been an active dissertation chair and reader for doctoral students.
